December 17, 2020 — The House of Commons Standing Committee on Heritage is conducting a study on Challenges to Art, Culture, Heritage and Sport Sectors caused by COVID-19. Earlier this week, the CMA submitted a brief to the Committee, in which we emphasize the need to prioritize the renewal of the national museum policy, provide additional pandemic relief to the sector, increase federal funding to museums and recognize the tremendous benefits to the economy and society. You can read our brief here.
October 8, 2020 — The deadline for the Museums Assistance Program (MAP) — COVID-19 Emergency Support Fund for Heritage Organizations has now passed. We have been informed by the Department of Canadian Heritage that not all of the $53 million that was dedicated to museums has been allocated. The CMA, CMA Board and provincial and territorial museums associations have asked the government not to reprofile the remaining funds. We have asked that the remaining emergency funding that was earmarked for our sector go toward advancing the update of the national museum policy and to ensuring that museums — and the associations that support them — can survive the pandemic.
